Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash has had to defend his strategy using relievers as starters time and time again.
At least this time Arden Key Color Rush Jersey , the defense came after the formula led his team to a victory.
Wilmer Font held the high-scoring Yankees in check and the Rays stopped New York 3-1 Sunday to avoid a four-game sweep.
”We’re doing everything we can (and) what we think is right to win games,” Cash said. ”When we win, yeah, we like it. When we lose, it’s grueling.”
In his third start of the season, Font turned in his best performance of the year in any role, allowing just one run in 4 2-3 innings with five strikeouts. The right-hander, who also has eight relief appearances, matched a career-high with 74 pitches.
Tampa Bay, which has been hurt by injuries to its rotation, employed a reliever to open for the 15th time in 29 games. Entering the game, relievers working as starters had allowed 13 earned runs in 18 innings.
”Today he gave us a huge boost,” Cash said of the 28-year old right-hander. ”He probably got a little deeper in the game than what we even anticipated.”
Matt Duffy drove in two runs with a second-inning single for his first multi-RBI game in over a month. The infielder Youth Baker Mayfield Jersey , who missed 2017 while undergoing two Achilles surgeries, is hitting .352 (25 for 71) with seven RBI over his last 18 contests.
”I typically don’t see CC too well,” Duffy said. ”That wasn’t the greatest pitch to hit, but when you’re going well, those seem to fall.”
Carlos Gomez had an RBI double as Tampa Bay scored all three runs in the second against CC Sabathia (4-2). The left-hander pitched into the eighth inning for the first time this season and struck out 10 for just the second time since the start of 2014.
”I just tried to be really aggressive because they were aggressive,” Sabathia said.
Tampa Bay defeated New York for the first time this season. The Yankees opened the season with five straight wins, outscoring the Rays 31-10 over the games, and was trying for a four-game sweep. The Rays are 5-18 in their last 23 games at Yankee Stadium.
Chaz Roe (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory. Sergio Romo, who has also drawn five starts this season, closed for his third save in six chances.
Rookie Willy Adames singled to lead off the Rays second. Adeiny Hechavarria, who missed nearly a month with a strained hamstring, singled for the first of his three hits. Gomez doubled and Duffy delivered a two-out single.
Hechavarria also robbed rookie sensation Gleyber Torres of a base hit with dive and throw from shortstop in the seventh inning.
New York matched its lowest run total at home this season.
Aaron Judge and Didi Gregorius worked two-out walks against Jose Alvarado in the fifth, but the hard-throwing lefty struck out Giancarlo Stanton on four pitches.
In the eighth Calvin Ridley Color Rush Jersey , Diego Castillo struck out Gary Sanchez on three pitches to strand another runner.
Aaron Hicks homered off Font in the fifth – it was actually the second homer of the day. Hours earlier, the Yankees held their 72nd Old-Timers’ Day and Nick Swisher, making his debut with the former players, hit a long drive to right field.
Hall of Famers Whitey Ford and Reggie Jackson were joined by the likes of Don Larsen, Willie Randolph, Andy Pettitte and Jason Giambi. Current New York manager Aaron Boone also took part for the first time.
Rays: Tampa Bay will start a reliever for the third consecutive day when RHP Ryne Stanek (1-1, 2.55 ERA) draws the start as the Rays open a three-game series at Houston. He’ll be opposed by RHP Gerrit Cole (8-1, 2.40 ERA).
Yankees: New York heads to Washington for a makeshift doubleheader Monday. The teams will resume a suspended game from May 15 before a traditional nine-inning game follows. With heavy rain falling, play was halted after 5 1-2 innings with the teams tied at 3. The teams were set to resume play, and their interleague series, one day later, but rain continued to fall and both events were postponed. Boone will turn to his bullpen to begin the day and RHP Sonny Gray (4-4, 4.96 ERA) takes the mound in game two.
Yankees: OF Brett Gardner (knee) was held out of the lineup with a little soreness.
Randy Moss on one side http://www.seahawksauthorizedshops.com/authentic-barkevious-mingo-jersey , Terrell Owens on the other. Isaac Bruce in the slot.
A defensive coordinator’s dilemma.
On Saturday, the 48 voters for the Pro Football Hall of Fame face a similar complexity. Is Moss, in his first year of eligibility for the Canton, Ohio, shrine, worthy of induction? And what about T.O., in his third year on the ballot? Or Bruce, in his fourth year.
How about all of them?
The two dynamic and sometimes controversial wide receivers and the always-reliable and often spectacular Bruce are among 15 modern-era candidates. From that group, no more than five will be selected.
Also being considered are first-year eligibles linebackers Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher, and guard Steve Hutchinson. Other finalists are running back Edgerrin James; center Kevin Mawae; safeties John Lynch and Brian Dawkins; guard Alan Faneca; tackles Joe Jacoby and Tony Boselli; and cornerbacks Ty Law and Everson Walls.
The senior nominees are linebacker Robert Brazile and guard Jerry Kramer. In the contributor’s committee it is Bobby Beathard.
Much of the attention will be paid to the guys who caught the ball extremely well. Moss and Owens made the Team of the Decade for the 2000s. Bruce’s TD reception won the 2000 Super Bowl for the Rams against the Titans.
Owens has been a lightning rod because despite impressive career numbers, he’s failed twice to get the necessary 80 percent for induction.
”I think it diminishes the reputation and the credibility the Hall of Fame is really revered for,” Owens says of not being elected for what he believes are ”character” reasons.
”I have kind of just moved on from it. Me not getting in first time – and everybody else said at the same time, I should have been in – and even the second time Will Dissly Color Rush Jersey , I have been in (contention) – I am very fortunate and blessed to have played the game as long as I did considering I thought I would never play beyond the college level.”
Owens played for five teams in 15 pro seasons, having the most success with San Francisco and Dallas, losing a Super Bowl with Philadelphia. Each of his stints in those cities – he also was with Buffalo and Cincinnati – didn’t end well.
”Early in my career when I was an adolescent and teenager, I had self-esteem issues,” he explains. ”I had to get out of that. You have to believe in yourself in order to progress in order to do anything in your life. No matter what, I am not going to look at the Hall of Fame as a platform to kind of validate what I did in my career.”
Nor does Moss, who spent 14 NFL seasons with five clubs, having his best years with Minnesota and New England. He was the 1998 Offensive Rookie of the Year with the Vikings, and in 2007 helped the Patriots go undefeated until they fell to the Giants in the Super Bowl.
Like Owens, Moss also had some run-ins with teammates, opponents, coaches and executives. Whether that affects him as Owens believes it has impacted him for Hall of Fame consideration remains to be seen.
”Going through college and my first couple years in the league, I never looked at the Hall of Fame or at the (gold) jackets Keon Broxton Milwaukee Brewers Jersey ,” Moss says. ”I loved and enjoyed the game. As I retired, now on my fifth year and up as a finalist, now is the time I really looked at, `Am I Hall of Fame worthy? Will I get the nod?’
”Through my playing career, the Hall of Fame was not in my equation. I just enjoyed coming to the stadium and being around my teammates and just competing.”
Moss admits there might be some nerves Saturday.
”It’s kind of like you going into court and being in front of a jury, the fate is in their hands,” he says. ”I don’t have a vote.
”What I will do is be around close family and friends and just wait it out. … I guess your overall final accomplishment for playing in the NFL is the gold jacket. Some nervousness will come in.
”I think I am worthy of getting in on the first ballot, but if not, you win some, you lose some. If the Hall of Fame is my final stop, I am definitely honored to be part of it.”
